Tot Mom #18

Ashley & Alyssa — Two peas in a pod

Ashley’s father was in the military, so she moved around a little when she was a child. She has lived in Fayetteville, NC, Germany, and spent most of her childhood in Laurens, South Carolina. Ashley attended Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC, and earned her Bachelors degree in Psychology and her Masters Degree in Counseling. She is now one of only two counselors working for the Gaston County School system. Her job entails working with students in need of counseling, as well as doing mental health assessments. She and her husband, Carlton, have been together since high school and were married after they graduated from college. It is always an amazing, beautiful sight to see high school sweethearts stay in love and get married. They moved to Charlotte in 2007 to pursue job opportunities and love it here. Traveling is a high priority for this young couple. They have been to Austria, Holland, Jamaica, Germany, and various places in the US. After having Alyssa, the traveling has come to a halt, however, I have a feeling it will continue as their baby gets a little older. Ashley and Carlton also enjoy trying new restaurants and relaxing with a Net Flix movie. Ashley loves to read and just purchased a kindle. Her other passion is baking! She has a vision of owning a cupcake bakery one day and won’t stop until she makes her dream come true.

Alyssa is 20 months old and goes by the nickname Aly. Ashley got the name Aly from the show ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’. She loved the name Aly, yet didn’t want it to be Alyssa’s full name. Alyssa loves being outside, taking walks, and going to the pool. She also enjoys reading books, especially pop ups. Recently, crayons, coloring books, and drawing have become a favorite activity. Arts and crafts have begun taking over and Aly says on a daily basis, “Mommy draw!” Alyssa has also been paying attention to computers. She climbs onto the desk chair, grabs the computer, and gives it a big hug and kiss. The love and attention for the computer might have something to do with the fact that the screen saver has a picture of mommy!

The hardest thing about being a Tot Mom is juggling work, personal time, and mommy time. Ashley’s advice to all mommies is to set aside 30 minutes a day to have alone time to do something you enjoy. This has really made a difference in her own personal life. The best thing about being a Tot Mom is seeing how much Alyssa learns. From crawling, to talking, to walking, and feeding herself, it is a blessing to watch.
