Jen & Makayla — Blue Eyed Girls
Jen was born in New Jersey and moved to Greensboro when she was five. She attended UNC in Chapel Hill and earned a sociology degree. Jen worked at Hope Haven in the substance abuse recovery facility doing data base entry. She and her husband (Jonathan, AKA J. Lee) recently decided Jen should be a stay at home mom and she is loving it! She and Jonathan met on Match.com. Jen contacted him first and they went on their first date to the Charlotte Checkers hockey game. They had difficulty making small talk due to the noise level of the game, however, knew there was a spark. By date three, they were hooked. They’ve been together for 4 1/2 years and married for two. She describes both of them as “low key”, stating they enjoy relaxing and going out to eat. She also responded, “We have only been on one date since Makayla was born.” Wow! Their time together used to be spent playing on a sand volleyball league together down at Renaissance Park. Jen’s hobbies are reading and couponing. In her little bit of spare time, she loves to clip coupons and is proud to say she saves 50%-75% on grocery bills. Jen also works 20 hours a week rating websites for Lionbridge. No wonder this Tot Mom doesn’t have much spare time!
Makayla is fourteen months old and earned the nickname ‘Boogs’. Jen has no rhyme or reason for it, it just sort of came out and stuck. Makayla is a firecracker, having quite the explosive temper. When she was born, one of the first things the nurses commented was she had a temper. Jen stated that those nurses were right. Most of it was due to having stomach problems for the first three months, so she cried nonstop. She wouldn’t take breast milk and they tried five formulas. By month four things calmed down, thank goodness. To see Makayla and hang out with her, you would never know she could have such a temper. The only time she cried was when the snacks were over and I found this quite funny because Makayla loves to eat as much as Madi. Some of her favorite things to do are to read books, go for walks being pulled in her wagon, and visit zoos to pet the animals. She also loves music and dancing, which leaves her quite tuckered out in the evening, so she is in bed by 6:00. That is the earliest time I have ever heard of a child going to bed, but Jen loves it!
The hardest thing about being a Tot Mom is Makayla’s schedule. Jen feels as if there is no time to recharge herself, which can get exhausting. The best thing is being with her baby and getting to do things with her now. You don’t realize how much you are missing until you have more time.
